Custom Luxury Home in Downtown Cary, NC

Having lived in Cary for the past 27 years, Lynn and Michael truly consider the town to be “home”. However, they wanted to enjoy the benefits of living in a more walkable area, so they started the difficult task of finding land in desirable Downtown Cary, close to friends and with easy access to restaurants and coffee bars. 

Michael says, “Finding a lot in Downtown Cary is like finding a four-leaf clover, and it wouldn’t have happened for us without the help of Jon Rufty. We’ve known him for years and when we told him we were looking to build, Jon found the perfect place to build the home of our dreams.”

After finding the lot, the homeowners worked with Frazier Home Design as their architect and Lynn took on the interior design process herself. “This home is all Lynn’s vision,” Michael explains, “We’re so thrilled with how it turned out.”

The couple’s primary goal during the build was to create a livable, fun house in an urban setting, without giving up amenities like a pool and spacious outdoor living space. They relied on the Rufty Homes team to listen to their ideas and bring them all to life. 

“Rufty understands that building a custom home is a personal process. They encouraged us to become part of the building process versus just following it,” says Michael. “We would tell them about what was most important to us and they would guide us in making decisions so our plans became fully formed. It was clear that their goal was for us to look at the house five years from now and feel just as happy—if not more—than the day we moved in.”

It wasn’t just the Rufty Homes team that made an impression on the homeowners, but everyone involved at every stage of the build. “We want to highlight the subcontractors that helped bring our ideas to life. Everyone from the framers to the kitchen and bath experts to the electrician was wonderful, and our Project Manager, Mike Koppen was great too. It takes a village to complete a build like this and Rufty has assembled an excellent team,” Michael goes on to say.

One of the couple’s main points of interest was the backyard area. “I was tired of doing yard work,” laughs Lynn, “I didn’t want grass in the backyard, and I love our cozy outdoor living area now. Along with the pool, we have a screened-in area complete with two TVs, which is perfect for relaxing.” 

Inside, the couple wanted to create an open concept yet have different areas for a more intimate feel. Lynn explains, “We wanted two TV areas without having to go to different levels of the home. The house is in an L-shape and we have a front room where we enjoy our coffee in the mornings and then our ‘evening area’ that’s more of a movie and sports-watching area. The rooms have different vibes, but the main living area is open, which is exactly what we wanted.”

One of the special features Michael requested was a car lift in the garage so he could work on his car. “Lynn and I had some things done in this house that most people don’t do, like the lift, but Rufty had no problem making that happen. It felt great knowing they could handle any of the requests we had.”

Now that they’ve moved in, Lynn and Michael look forward to enjoying the little details that make this house their home with the people that matter most to them. 

Lynn says, “We’re fortunate enough to have both of our adult children living nearby and we plan to make Sunday afternoons a family day where everyone comes over to spend time by the pool, grill out, and make memories together. We’re so thankful for everyone on the Rufty Homes team who worked to make our dream of living in Downtown Cary a reality.”
