May is National Building Safety Month, and for us, it's a good reminder of something we think about every single day: the people building your home should be just as protected as the home they're building.
This year marks National Construction Safety Week, May 4-8, and it coincides with something important: the 13th annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, developed by OSHA, NIOSH, and the Center for Construction Research and Training.

A Safety Stand-Down is exactly what it sounds like. It's a voluntary event where employers pause work to talk directly with employees about fall hazards and reinforce the importance of fall protection. It might sound simple, but that pause matters. The Stand-Down provides dedicated time for employers to address this critical safety issue through training, inspections, and open conversations.
Falls aren't a small problem in construction. Fatalities caused by falls on jobsites continue to be the leading cause of death for construction employees. Those are real people. And improper fall protection is also the most frequently cited OSHA violation each year in construction, which tells you how easy it is for safety to slip when it isn't actively prioritized.
Rufty Homes is a licensed general contractor through the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors. That license isn't just a piece of paper. It means we've met the state's requirements for knowledge, financial responsibility, and professional accountability. It means when we say we're safeguarding life, health, and property, there's a governing body holding us to that standard.

We participate in safety awareness events like the Stand-Down because we believe a well-built home starts with a safe jobsite. Our crews are trained, our sites are managed, and our standards don't drop because a deadline is tight or a day gets busy.
When you hire Rufty Homes, you're not just getting a beautiful custom home. You're getting a team that takes every phase of the build, including the parts you never see: the safety protocols, the compliance, and the culture that keeps everyone on that site going home at the end of the day.
