In 2011, North Carolina State University introduced The Point, a chancellor’s residence that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity. Designed by Marvin Malecha, then-dean of NC State’s College of Design, and constructed by Rufty Homes, this 8,500-square-foot home on Centennial Campus serves as both a private residence and a public venue for university events.
The Point was conceived as a welcoming space that strikes a balance between formality and comfort. Its ground floor encompasses approximately 5,400 square feet of public space, designed to host receptions and gatherings for up to 200 guests. The upper level offers 3,100 square feet of private living quarters, including three bedrooms, a sitting room, a screened porch, and a small kitchen, providing a comfortable retreat for the chancellor and family.
The residence showcases a “familiar modern” architectural style, blending contemporary design with traditional elements. Constructed almost entirely from North Carolina materials, the home features locally sourced brick matched to Holladay Hall, the university’s first building, as well as wood from the university’s Hofmann Forest. Sustainable features include solar panels, a geothermal heating and cooling system with 14 wells, and LED lighting, reflecting the university’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
The interior, designed by Judy Pickett of Design Lines, Ltd., received national acclaim. The kitchen was honored with the National Association of Home Builders’ 2012 “Room of the Year” award and a Platinum Award for Kitchen Design at the Best in American Living Awards. Featuring a vaulted ceiling, black marble countertops, white cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances, the kitchen serves as both a functional space and a central gathering area.
The project was funded entirely through private donations from more than 70 individuals and businesses, with additional in-kind contributions of services and materials. This collaborative effort underscores the community’s investment in the university’s future and its leadership.
As NC State welcomes a new chancellor, The Point remains a symbol of the university’s dedication to excellence, sustainability, and community engagement. Its thoughtful design and multifunctional spaces continue to support the university’s mission and serve as a gathering place for students, faculty, alumni, and guests.
