Last month, we talked to the moms on our team about the top luxury custom home ideas that mothers love. Now, with Father’s Day coming up, we chatted with some of the dads on our team to get more insight into what fathers really want when building or renovating a luxury home.

We also included some additional project ideas that are perfect for fathers. Rufty Homes Dads Weigh in on Luxury Custom Home Ideas

What’s your favorite place in your home?

Chad Joyce, Accounting: My screen porch.

Mike Koppen, Project Management: The kitchen.

Parker Shanahan, Business Development: The crawl space.

Don Pegram, Project Management: The rear covered porch and outdoor kitchen.

Garth Stevens, Project Management: The rear covered porch!

What makes this spot your favorite? Is it a particular feature you love?

Chad: I love being able to enjoy time as a family, gathered around the table for meals, games, etc., and not having to worry about mosquitos or flies.

Mike: It’s all brand new from a recent remodel, and as of this week, we are finally cooking in it! Going from electric to gas is such a great upgrade. I love preparing meals for my family. It’s very rewarding and being creative is my favorite part of being in the kitchen.

Parker: I like all the ductwork, pipes, and wires. I also like the musty smell.

Don: I can sit, relax, and cook without the hustle and bustle of the outside world.

Garth: I can totally disconnect there! I love my outdoor fireplace, speakers, rocking chairs, and swings.

What design-build feature should every dad or grandpa request in his custom Rufty home?

Chad: I would highly recommend a screen porch. We added it to our house 8 years ago and we find ourselves spending time outside just about every day. Before adding it, we had a back deck area, but we hardly spent any time out there. Adding the screen porch was a game changer.

Mike: A gym and/or outdoor cooking area are a must. I also recommend adding auto screens, a hot tub, and heaters to a porch area.

Parker: I recommend a small outbuilding as far away from the house as possible for a place that’s all your own.

Don: You can’t go wrong with a rear covered porch and an outdoor kitchen.

Garth: A room or place to disconnect when needed, but that also feels inviting to others!

Other Custom Home Ideas That Dads Will Love

We love all of these suggestions from the dads on our team! Here are a few more ideas that the dad or grandpa in your life might enjoy.

A Garage With Plenty of Storage Space

If the dad in your life is a gear head, they’ll love turning a regular garage into their own little sanctuary. A polished concrete floor can give the area a nice element of design that’s designed to hold up to high pressure. Complete the space with built-in storage for all of Dad’s favorite tools.

A Bar Fit for a Guy’s Night

Whether your favorite dad is a fan of craft beer, a glass of vino, or even a good mocktail, building a bar in your home can give him a place to perfect his pour. All of his buddies will be clamoring to come over for the next poker night where they can sip on a drink while hoping for a lucky hand.

A Man Cave Based on His Hobbies

Think about your dad or grandpa’s favorite hobby. Does he spend his free time cheering on his college teams? Maybe he’s a movie buff who loves even the most obscure films? Or perhaps woodworking is his passion. Whatever it is, building a man cave dedicated to that hobby is the best way to show him you care.

Rufty Homes Moms Weigh in on Custom Home Ideas

What’s your favorite place in your home?

Nicole Pounders, Client Coordinator: My living room

Mary Beth Buie, Client Coordinator: Our living room

Sydney Jamison, Business Development: I love to sit on my back porch

Kelly Nicolson, Business Manager: My study in the mornings and my deck in the evenings.

What makes this spot your favorite? Is it a particular feature you love?

Nicole: It’s cozy yet open to the rest of the home so we can interact with each other. We have a large L-shaped sofa where we can seat a lot of people to watch movies or have a fun game night.

Mary Beth: Our living room is where it all happens… the stuff you don’t want to miss. It’s busy, fun, and chaotic at times with two teenage daughters coming and going. It’s where they stop to tell a funny story about their day or share their excitement for plans as they are passing through. At any moment it can turn into a dance studio or a concert room for guitar playing and singing. Some nights, it serves as a runway for a fashion show when someone needs help deciding what to wear to an event. And when it finally gets quiet, it’s a place where their dad and I love to spend time watching movies.

Sydney: It’s quieter (sometimes) than all of the noise and activity going on inside. I love to sit out there on the weekends and drink my coffee and read a book. We have a fountain that provides great background noise and is so peaceful.

Kelly: Both areas are relaxing and allow me quiet time. I like mornings in the study because I can read and drink my coffee and enjoy the morning sun. I love being outside at the end of a long day and it helps me unwind and enjoy the sounds of nature when I am on my deck. Both the study and deck were designed with comfortable furniture to relax in.

What design-build feature should every mom or grandma consider adding to her custom Rufty home?

Nicole: I think a cozy spot that is uniquely theirs and brings them joy is always a nice feature to have. Something like a reading nook, a sewing room, a room with a nice view outside, etc. Create a place that makes you smile when you are there.

Mary Beth: A carefully designed mudroom to catch all of the aftermath that a busy life brings in. Organized chaos can be both functional and beautiful.

Sydney: A great closet and an exterior living space to retreat to.

Kelly: A room or space that she can have her "me" time.

Other Custom Home Ideas That Moms Will Love

Looking for even more inspiration? Here are a few other custom home features that the mom or grandma in your life may love.

A Charming Breakfast Nook

As the kids get older, and schedules get more hectic, it can be hard finding a time to connect as a family. Incorporating a breakfast nook into your home design can create a “landing space” where everyone can gather, even if just for a few moments each day.

Include comfortable seating and plenty of tabletop space where the kids can grab a quick breakfast on their way out the door or settle in to do their homework with a snack after school.

A Functional Walk-In Closet

Whether she has a different handbag for every occasion, loves to color coordinate her clothes, or is a sucker for a new pair of shoes, nearly every mom would love a walk-in closet to help her organize her wardrobe.

A well-designed walk-in closet should have plenty of storage and great lighting to help mom make the most of the space.

A Relaxing Soaking Tub

Every mom could use more relaxation in her life. When designing your custom home, consider adding a deep-soaking tub where mom can soak away the stress of the day in her own private sanctuary.

Complete the room with a basket of her favorite bath products so she can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, even if just for a minute.

And, even though we might be biased, we’re not alone in this thought. Let us help guide you on how to build an estate in Wake County.

As of January 2023, Raleigh is said to be growing at the second-fastest rate in the country, making it one of the nation’s hottest places to put down roots. If you’ve been thinking about building your own housing estate in Wake County, there’s no better time to get started.

Continue reading this in-depth guide to learn all about the steps to take to create a luxury estate that your family will love for years. Ready to get started now? Choosing the Right Luxury Builder

The most important decision you’ll make when planning a luxury home remodel or custom new construction project is the builder you hire for the job. These are the most important things to consider when you’re looking for a builder to hire.

Experience

Ideally, you’ll live in your future home for decades, if not for the rest of your life. Hiring a luxury custom builder with plenty of experience can help you ensure that your home will be built right and not give you problems down the road.

Having been building custom homes throughout Wake County for more than 35 years, we’re proud to be part of the exclusive NAHB Builder 20 Club of the country’s leading custom home builders.

References

One of the easiest ways to learn more about what it’s like to work with a particular builder is to hear from the people who know best: their past clients. Before you hire a builder, take the time to ask for references or read online reviews to get a better sense of how the builder works.

We’d love for you to read through our client testimonials to learn more about what it’s like to work with our team on your luxury remodeling or new construction project.

Portfolio

Finally, before hiring a builder for your project, be sure to look through their portfolio of past builds to see if you actually like the work they do. As you do, pay special attention to the different styles and make note of what you would like for your home. You can reference these design aspects when planning your own project.

We’d love for you to browse through our luxury renovation projects and luxury custom builds for inspiration.

Choosing the Right Location

Once you settle on the right builder for your project, the next step is all about location, location, location. One of the many reasons we love Wake County and the greater Raleigh area is that there are so many amazing locations to explore.

Keep these tips in mind as you decide where to build your luxury estate.

Consider Building Outside the Beltline

When deciding on the perfect location for your home, you’ll need to choose between building inside the beltline (ITB) or outside the beltline (OTB). The areas ITB include downtown Raleigh and the heart of the city, while OTB includes more suburban areas around the City of Oaks.

There’s no right or wrong answer on where to build, but we’re seeing more popularity with building OTB because of the following benefits:

It can be a bit less expensive than building ITB

You can often get more space

540 is nearing completion, which will make getting around even easier

Areas OTB can be less busy, without sacrificing amenities

Great Areas to Consider OTB

If you do want to branch out from the city’s center, here are some of our favorite locations OTB you might consider for your project:

Holly Springs

Johnston County

Wake Forest

Chatham County

Morrisville

Apex

Cary

As you can see on our Featured Projects Map, we are happy to build around all areas of the greater Triangle area!

Choosing the Right Features

After you choose your builder and find the perfect location to build your new luxury estate, you can start thinking in more detail about what features you want to include in your build. With a luxury custom home, there is almost no limit to what you can build, so take the time to be thoughtful about how you plan to use your home and the features that will mean the most to you and your family.

Of course, our team here at Rufty Homes is here to help inspire you as well. Below are some of our favorite luxury estate features that you might want to include in your own home as well.

A Wine Cellar That’s Functional and Beautiful

A beautiful wine cellar is a great addition to every luxury home, but we recommend taking it beyond just a storage space for your favorite bottles. Incorporate high-end design elements into the space so it’s an eye-catching, thoughtful part of your home that also happens to store your wine neatly.

Floor-to-Ceiling Windows for Plenty of Natural Light

When you’re picking out the perfect spot to build in Wake County, make sure you can fully enjoy the view by incorporating floor-to-ceiling windows in your space. This will let natural light flood into your home and make for a jaw-dropping design.

A Luxurious Outdoor Space

One of the many reasons we love the greater Raleigh area is because the weather is pleasant here more often than not. When planning your build, don’t forget to design a spectacular outdoor space so you can take advantage of the weather. Adding a resort-style pool, an outdoor kitchen, or a spacious seating area is a great way to get the most out of your backyard.

You might even add a sports facility like tennis courts or a soccer field, depending on your family’s favorite hobbies.

Technology That Makes Your Life Easier

Finally, use technology to your advantage by incorporating unique tech into your design. Smart lighting can help you set the mood in any room, while a high-tech audio system allows you to stream music throughout every area of your home.

Navigating the Construction Process

The final step in building an estate in Wake County is the actual construction of your home. This includes the following three phases.

Pre-Construction

There are several steps that need to happen before we can start construction on your home. We’ll start by analyzing the lot, making sure that it’s suitable for your design plans. This can include testing the soil, leveling the ground for a more even build, etc.

Once we’re sure that the lot is appropriate for your build, we’ll start planning how to maximize the space of the land so you get the best views and most usability. From there, we’ll secure local zoning requirements and permits so we can move forward with your project.

Once everything is ready, we’ll create a construction schedule, officially getting your project on the books.

Construction

Next, the real fun begins. You’ll be assigned a project manager who will be there for every step of your project. Once the construction begins, we’ll communicate with you regularly, so you always know what to expect.

Beyond the actual building process, we’ll also work to minimize unexpected costs, manage any product or supply delays, and work with our trusted subcontractors to make sure all of the work done on your home is up to our rigorous standards.

During this phase, our goal is to make sure you always feel in the loop, helping to create a low-stress building experience.

Post-Construction

When your home is built, the work is not quite done for our team. We’ll do a final walk-through of your home with our team, looking for anything that needs a finishing touch. After creating this punch list of items, we’ll also do a walkthrough with you around the home. If you notice that anything is out of place or not what you were expecting, we’ll make it right.

Finally, we’ll do our “homeowner orientation” where you’ll learn everything you need to know about moving into and living in your new home. This is when we’ll give you all the warranty information so you know what to do should an issue arise down the line.

After that, it’s finally time to move in and enjoy your beautiful new luxury estate!
