38 Years of Forever Homes: A Thank You from Rufty Homes

Since 1988, one thing has never changed: none of this happens without the families who trusted us.

This month marks thirty-eight years of building and remodeling luxury, custom homes in the Triangle. Thirty-eight years of walking raw lots with families who could see something we hadn't drawn yet. Thirty-eight years of final walkthroughs, of handing over keys, of driving past a house years later and knowing exactly which decisions live behind those windows.

We could spend this anniversary talking about ourselves. Instead, we want to spend it saying thank you.

To every family who chose us. To the ones who called us back for the second house, and the third. To the clients who introduced us to their neighbors, their colleagues, their grown children ready to build their own. To the architects, designers, lenders, and craftsmen who have stood alongside us on job sites through boom markets and hard ones. A custom home is not a product you sell. It is a relationship you are invited into, and you do not get thirty-eight years of invitations by accident.

You gave us those years. This is our attempt to honor them.

What Thirty-Eight Years Buys You

The Triangle of 1988 is not the Triangle of today. When Jon Rufty founded this company, Wake County held roughly a third of the people it holds now. The land we build on today was farmland, forest, and quiet two-lane roads. Entire towns have grown up around the homes we finished decades ago.

We have built through the savings and loan crisis, the dot-com correction, the 2008 collapse that took a generation of builders out of business, a pandemic that scrambled every supply chain in the country, and a lumber market that has behaved, at times, like a commodity casino. We are still here. That is not luck. It is the accumulated result of thousands of small decisions to protect the client's interest ahead of the quarter's numbers.

Along the way, we have been fortunate enough to be recognized for some of it:

• Jon built the nationally recognized HealthyHouse™ in 1994 for the American Lung Association and the NAHB Research Center, now Home Innovation Research Labs.
• We constructed the first Energy Star home in North Carolina, in cooperation with Carolina Power & Light, now Duke Energy Progress. Green, before green was a marketing category.
• In 2002, we completed North Carolina's first Fortified For Safer Living® home.
• We built NC State University’s Chancellor’s Residence, whose kitchen was named Room of the Year in the 2012 Best in American Living Awards.
• Our project The Power of Collaboration earned a 2022 Best in American Living Award in Entire Home, Over $750,000.
• An Artist's Vision Realized won Gold at the 40th annual Best in American Living Awards in 2024, in Remodeling: Addition.
• The Triangle Business Journal has named us a top custom home builder and, in 2023, honored us with a Corporate Philanthropy Award.

We are grateful for every one of these. But awards go on a shelf. The homes go on for generations. Ask us which one we would rather have.

Thirty-Eight Years, Fifteen People, 163 Years of Experience

Here is the part of the anniversary we care about most.

A custom home is not built by a company. It is built by people, and the same people, year after year, learning a craft that cannot be taught in a semester. Our team carries more than 163 combined years of experience at Rufty Homes, an average of nearly eleven years each. In an industry where crews turn over constantly and job titles change every eighteen months, that number is the single most meaningful statistic we have.

When you build with us, you are not handed off to whoever was hired last month. You are working with people who have been doing this together, here, for a very long time.

With gratitude and a great deal of respect:

Twenty-nine years. Sixteen. Fifteen. Read those numbers again. People do not stay somewhere for three decades because of the pay alone. They stay because the work is good, because the standard is real, and because they are proud of what they hand over at the end.

We should also thank the people who are not on this list. Our subcontractors and trade partners, many of whom have been on Rufty job sites longer than some of our own employees have, are the reason the finish work looks the way it does. They sit in our OSHA safety trainings. They show up in the heat. They take the extra hour to get a miter right when nobody would have noticed. Thank you.

The Next Thirty-Eight

There is a word we come back to often around here: stewardship. A custom home is not a transaction that ends at closing. It is a place where a family will make almost every memory that matters to them. Somebody will learn to walk in that hallway. Somebody will come home from the hospital to that front door. In thirty years, someone will stand in that kitchen and tell a story that begins, "this is the house I grew up in."

We are stewards of that. It is the most serious thing we know how to say about our work, and it is why we have never been interested in building faster, cheaper, or more.

Thirty-eight years in, we still get a little quiet at the final walkthrough. That has not worn off, and we hope it never does.

To the families who let us build your forever homes: thank you. Truly. You gave us a life's work.
